Why Vets Now Spay and Neuter Cats by Five Months

Veterinary groups now recommend spaying or neutering cats before five months. Why earlier is safer, cheaper and prevents surprise litters.

For decades, the standard advice was to spay or neuter a cat at about six months. Many owners still wait for that date, and some are surprised by a litter first.

The recommendation has changed. Veterinary organizations now advise doing it earlier, by five months.

What changed

A veterinary task force on feline sterilization launched the Feline Fix by Five initiative, which calls for spaying or neutering cats before five months of age. AAHA reports that the concept has been endorsed by the AVMA, AAHA, the feline veterinary association, the Association of Shelter Veterinarians and a long list of other groups.

Why earlier is better

  • Prevents surprise litters. Many kittens reach puberty before six months.
  • Easier surgery. Procedures in younger cats are generally quicker.
  • Faster recovery from anesthesia and surgery.
  • Fewer minor complications, according to the veterinary literature AAHA cites.
  • Less spraying and roaming when males are neutered before those habits start.

Cost and where to go

The ASPCA’s cost estimates put a cat’s spay or neuter at around $150, though prices vary widely. Many shelters adopt out cats already sterilized, and low-cost spay and neuter clinics exist in many areas. The ASPCA keeps a directory.

Adopting an older cat?

If an adult cat is not yet spayed or neutered, it is still worth doing. Ask your vet about timing, especially for a female who may be in heat.
