Pet insurance is sold on fear of the big bill. Whether it makes sense for your cat depends less on the cat than on you: how much surprise expense you could absorb tomorrow, and how you would decide if you could not.

Key figures

  • $386 a year 2024 NAPHIA average US cat accident-and-illness premium
  • $32 a month Monthly equivalent of that 2024 US average

What it costs

The North American Pet Health Insurance Association (NAPHIA), the industry body, reports that the average accident and illness premium for US cats was about $386 a year, or $32 a month, in 2024. Accident-only plans cost less and cover less.

Premiums vary widely with age, breed, location, deductible and reimbursement level, and usually rise as the cat gets older.

How a policy actually pays

Most US pet insurance works as reimbursement: you pay the vet, then file a claim. Three settings decide what you get back:

SettingWhat it means
DeductibleWhat you pay each year before the policy pays
Reimbursement rateThe share of the bill it repays, often 70 to 90 percent
Annual limitThe maximum it pays in a year

A higher deductible lowers the premium. A plan with a low annual limit can leave you short on exactly the bill you bought it for.

What is usually not covered

  • Pre-existing conditions, anything noted before coverage began
  • Waiting periods right after you sign up
  • Routine care such as vaccines and checkups, unless you add a wellness plan
  • Some dental treatment, depending on the policy

Insurance or savings?

  1. Could you pay a large, sudden bill tomorrow without debt? If not, insurance buys time.
  2. Is your cat young and healthy? That is when coverage is cheapest and has the fewest exclusions.
  3. Would you rather self-insure? Set the premium aside monthly in a separate account and leave it there.
Read the sample policy

Before buying, read the full sample policy, not just the summary. Look for the definition of pre-existing conditions, the waiting periods and the annual limit.

The adult cat budget keeps premiums, care spending and money available distinct. The veterinary visit guide covers the planned care behind those budget lines.

NAPHIA reports an average of about $32 a month for accident and illness coverage for US cats in 2024. Your price depends on age, location and plan settings.

Does pet insurance cover pre-existing conditions?

Usually not. Conditions noted before coverage starts are commonly excluded, which is why buying early matters.

Is pet insurance worth it for an indoor cat?

Indoor cats still get urinary blockages, dental disease, cancer and swallowed objects. The question is whether you could pay a large bill without it.

Does pet insurance pay the vet directly?

Most US policies reimburse you after you pay. A few offer direct payment at participating clinics.
