Goldfish Can Live for Decades. Here Is How to Help

Most goldfish die young from small tanks and poor water, not old age. The care routine that lets them reach the 10 to 15 years PetMD describes.

Goldfish have a reputation as disposable pets that last a few months. In reality, a well-kept goldfish can outlive a dog. Most early deaths trace back to the same few causes, and all of them are fixable.

Key figures

  • 20 gallons PetMD minimum aquarium volume for juvenile goldfish
  • 65 to 75°F PetMD water temperature range for goldfish
  • 10 to 15 years Typical goldfish lifespan, according to PetMD

Why goldfish die young

  • Small tanks and bowls, which cannot dilute their waste
  • Uncycled tanks, where ammonia builds up in the first weeks
  • Overfeeding, which fouls the water
  • Untreated tap water with chlorine or chloramine
  • Tropical tankmates that need warmer water

Goldfish are social and do well with other goldfish, in a tank sized for their adult length.

A routine that works

  1. Test weekly for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.
  2. Change a portion of the water weekly with treated, temperature-matched water.
  3. Feed small amounts that are eaten in a couple of minutes.
  4. Clean filter media in old tank water, never under the tap.
  5. Plan for growth, since the RSPCA suggests 2 liters of water for every half centimeter of goldfish.
Fancy vs common goldfish

Round-bodied fancy goldfish swim more slowly and suit aquariums. Slim common and comet goldfish grow long and active and often do better in large tanks or ponds.

The goldfish bowl comparison covers housing limits. The overfeeding guide addresses food left in the system and the waste it creates.
