Aquarium Stand Weight: What a Full Tank Weighs

Check aquarium stand fit using published filled-tank weights and cabinet prices, including footprint, assembly, access and the load on the floor below.

An aquarium stand is carrying the tank, water and contents for years, not just holding an empty glass box while it is unpacked. Filled weight can be several times the empty-tank figure. A furniture top that looks wide enough still may not support the base in the way the aquarium manufacturer requires.

Begin with the tank’s model, outside dimensions and filled-load information. The examples below combine Aqueon’s own sizing chart with Waterbox’s current cabinet catalog. They explain what to measure and budget, without claiming that one brand’s cabinet automatically supports another brand’s tank.

The small aquarium on a wooden stool in the cover image is an example of household furniture, not a verified aquarium stand. Its appearance does not establish the stool’s load capacity or compatibility with any tank listed below.

Key figures

  • 785 lb Filled Aqueon 75-gallon tank

Filled weights reach hundreds of pounds quickly

Aqueon’s critical-dimensions chart gives these empty and full weights. Its note says filled weights can vary with substrate and decor. Use the values as model-specific planning figures and check how the household’s rocks, equipment and arrangement differ.

The 75-gallon chart figure is 687 lb above its empty weight. Lifting the empty tank does not establish how an ordinary cabinet will perform once it is filled. Likewise, two tanks with similar volumes can have different footprints and support requirements.

The 55 and 75 in this chart are both about four feet long, but the larger tank is substantially wider. A narrow stand that fits the 55 cannot be selected for the 75 merely because their front edges look similar. The aquarium placement guide helps plan access and location before the filled load makes relocation difficult.

Matching cabinets have prices and named compatibility

Waterbox’s current cabinet catalog separates dimensions and compatibility by model. Its public variant prices checked in October 2026 list the following PB cabinets at the same price in white, black and aspen finishes.

The $20 gap between the first two cabinets is a price comparison, not a reason to substitute a smaller cabinet. Aqueon’s 10 Leader, for example, is longer than the 17.7-inch PB 1818 top even though its gallon label is lower than the Waterbox tank paired with that cabinet.

Waterbox also lists larger OSB cabinets at $639, $849 and $1,059 for its 2420, 3620 and 4820 models. Those prices show that larger-system furniture can be a major setup expense. They do not establish the price of a compatible stand for every 40-, 55- or 75-gallon aquarium.

The support pattern matters as much as the top dimensions

Read the tank’s instructions for support beneath its frame or base. A framed glass aquarium, a rimless glass tank and an acrylic tank can have different requirements. A generic weight rating does not answer whether a stand supports the correct parts of the aquarium continuously and evenly.

Check the manufacturer’s position on foam or leveling mats before adding one. A mat supplied for one system is not permission to use the same material under every framed tank. Avoid an overhanging edge, improvised wedges under glass or a top that bends under load.

Inspect a used stand for water damage, swollen panels, damaged joints and missing hardware. A bargain cabinet with no model information can be difficult to match to a safe working load. The cost of finding replacements and arranging assembly can outweigh a small used-price discount.

Display shelving and household cabinets are different support arrangements. Confirm the aquarium's footprint and manufacturer-approved base rather than judging capacity from a photograph.

Assembly and access add to the purchase budget

Waterbox’s cabinet information says several ranges, including Cube and AIO, arrive flat packed and require assembly. It lists other ranges that arrive assembled. Verify the model rather than assuming that “cabinet included” means it arrives ready to load.

For a hypothetical budget, start with the published $299 PB 1818 price and add assumed $40 delivery, $80 assembly and $25 tax. That gives $444. Only the cabinet price is published; the remaining amounts illustrate charges to obtain at checkout or from an installer.

Cabinet doors should open with the tank in its final position. Leave the clearance the equipment requires for hoses, canister-filter removal, ventilation and electrical connections. A cheaper cabinet that traps the filter can turn routine care into a difficult dismantling job.

The filter cost comparison covers equipment placement. Keep the equipment inventory beside the stand plan so an enclosed storage space is not confused with proof that every filter and controller can safely operate inside it.

The floor carries the cabinet as well as the aquarium

The tank’s published full weight excludes any separate household furniture and additional items stored below. For a transparent illustration, a 625 lb tank plus a hypothetical 60 lb stand and 20 lb of extra equipment totals 705 lb. The two added weights are assumptions, and items already included in the tank figure should not be counted twice.

That arithmetic provides a load to discuss; it does not determine whether a particular floor can support it. Position, floor construction, support beneath the room and the way cabinet feet concentrate load matter. Do not turn a pounds-per-square-foot division into structural approval.

A stand label does not approve the floor

Follow the aquarium and cabinet instructions, and obtain a structural assessment when the floor’s capacity or a large installation is uncertain. A second-hand seller’s estimate and a photo of a similar tank are not substitutes for those checks.

Plan the aquarium move before delivery if a stand must be replaced under an established tank. Emptying, livestock care and restarting equipment can add more work than assembling new furniture. The final budget should include compatible furniture, delivery and any handling help while keeping optional cosmetic choices separate from the support the tank requires.

Questions people ask

How much does a full 55-gallon aquarium weigh?

Aqueon's chart lists its 55-gallon model at 625 lb full versus 78 lb empty. Substrate and decor can change the load, and the separate stand must also be included when considering the floor.

Will any 20-gallon stand fit any 20-gallon tank?

No. Shape and support requirements matter. Waterbox pairs PB 1818 with its AIO 20 Cube; that 17.7-inch square cabinet is not automatically a fit for a longer rectangular tank.

What does a matching cabinet cost?

Waterbox's checked PB examples list at $299, $319 and $379, with named compatible systems. Those prices are furniture examples, not quotes for a stand matching another manufacturer's aquarium.

Can a load-rated cabinet prove my floor is safe?

No. Cabinet support and floor structure are separate checks. Add the stand and other loads, confirm the installation requirements and seek structural advice where capacity is uncertain.
